About Urushi: The Urushi tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum), which grows only in East and South Asia—including Japan—is the source of traditional Japanese lacquer. Vessels made with Japanese Urushi are known for their high durability and quality. Over many years, Urushi products have been carefully developed. When applied, Urushi lacquer strengthens wood, acts as an insulator for hot foods, and protects the surface from food-related damage.
Echizen Shikki (Echizen lacquerware) has a history of over 1,500 years in Fukui Prefecture. The region had abundant access to Urushi, which led to the emergence of many skilled lacquerware craftsmen. Today, Echizen is also known for producing high-quality lacquerware for restaurants, both handmade and factory-produced in Japan.
About the maker: In Echizen, a region known for mass-producing lacquerware, Tomoaki Nakano takes a different approach. Rather than focusing on volume, he works as more of a lacquerware artist, creating beautifully textured, matte-finished pieces. At one point, he considered using synthetic materials or factory-made wood bases for mass production. However, he ultimately chose to pursue a more traditional path, dedicating himself to crafting natural, authentic Echizen Shikki.
While lacquerware is typically finished with a glossy polish, a unique characteristic of Echizen Shikki is its unpolished surface, which directly showcases the skill of the craftsman. Nakano's pieces reflect the techniques he learned from his father, a skilled Echizen Shikki artisan. His works feature thick layers of lacquer, resulting in a soft, matte texture that fits comfortably in the hand.
